About me

I am a lecturer and full-time post-graduate student at the University of Stellenbosch. I am part of the Digital Signal Processing group which forms part of the Dept. of Electrical & Electronic Engineering of the Engineering Faculty. When not helping my fellow collegues with their lecturing duties, I am also trying to finish my PhD dissertation (coffee helps in this regard).

Research

My main research interest is the field of statistical machine translation. Specifically, I am interested in the development of systems that are capable of performing speech-to-speech translation in multiple languages. Ultimately, I would like to such systems deployed on portable devices capable of fitting in your pocket.

In order to fulfill this goal, we have developed the Naval Interactive Dictionary as well as the Afrilator, the first English-Afrikaans speech-to-speech translation demonstrator. Currently we are busy developing the first English-isiXhosa Speech-to-Speech translation prototype.

I've also been known to dabble in speech recognition, speaker verification and image processing.
